Orchard Committee

Oak Creek Canyon is home to several historic apple orchards. For the most part
the orchards have been neglected for the past four to five decades and are in desperate need
of care if they are going to survive.
The Orchard Committee members are attempting to reverse the damage done by
time and bring the two orchards at Call of the Canyon and the many trees at Palatki back to
a sate of health. It is a daunting task but progress is being made. After one season of work
the trees are beginning to take shape as major pruning has been completed and more refined
pruning continues. Many huge cavities were filled in hopes of preventing further rotting of
the trunks and large branches.
Many visitors who visit the area to hike West Fork or are visiting Palatki
stop to ask the members what they are doing. It is an excellent opportunity to interact with
the visitor to tell them a little about the history that is so rich at these two sites.
