The primary focus as Wranglers is to support the Forest Service in maximizing their horse program. As we like to say, we are “lending a helping hoof!”

Wrangler Group RidingDifferent levels of riding expertise determine opportunities of participation, whether it be trail patrol or packing in supplies for several days. There are also opportunities for those who don’t ride but are comfortable handling horses. Our ground support members provide important help with mending fences, maintaining pastures, and the feeding and care of horses. Experienced drivers are always needed to haul animals and supplies to trailheads.

Wranglers help the Forest Service by packing in supplies to work parties, conducting litter patrols, and meeting the public on horseback. People especially enjoy meeting the horses, and it is rewarding to interact with visitors on behalf of the forest service.

Fence BuildingAfter each patrol a report is made recording the number of hikers, bikers, backpackers and pets that were observed and contacted. Litter is packed out and trail damage and trail needs are recorded. With the shutting down of various back roads, the ability to patrol hard-to-reach areas by horseback provides the Forest Service access to miles of trails that could only otherwise be accessed on foot.

Wrangler members must be willing to attend regular training sessions, must be proficient handling horses, and, if assisting on horseback, a competent rider. Email us for more information on Wrangler opportunities.
